Cabinet approval has been received to import 3,000 metric tons of raw ginger over the next 3 months.
The government stated that the Sri Lanka Government Commerce (Miscellaneous) Corporation will import raw ginger in phases.
The Secretary to the Ministry of Agriculture and Plantation Industries and the Secretary to the Ministry of Trade, Commerce and Food Security were instructed at the Cabinet meeting held on July 15, 2024, to examine the possibility of reducing the retail price of ginger to a level that is affordable to the consumer in the local market, while facilitating ginger production, and to submit a report with appropriate recommendations in this regard.
Accordingly, this proposal has received Cabinet approval based on the recommendations of the report they submitted.
The joint proposal submitted by Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industries Mahinda Amaraweera and Minister of Trade, Commerce and Food Security Nalin Fernando has been submitted to the Cabinet.
