Australian government bans social media for children under 16

November 29, 2024

The Australian government has decided to ban social media for children under the age of 16.

Foreign media reported that this proposal was presented to the country's parliament yesterday (Nov. 28) and passed.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has said that laws should be enacted to protect children from the harm caused by social media.

Foreign media have reported that it will take a year to implement these laws.

The government has decided to impose fines of up to 50 million Australian dollars on social media companies that do not comply with these laws.

Australia's Communications Minister Michelle Rowland says that social media platforms such as Snapchat, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram and X should be banned from being used by children under the age of 16.

However, foreign media has reported that social media such as YouTube, which can be accessed without a gaming and messaging account, will not be subject to this ban.
